1. From Uncertainty to Confidence

Flip through the gallery to see pictures which capture some of the uncertainties in life.

What picture caught your attention, and what does it highlight about uncertainty?

Confidence and uncertainty affect economics, politics, health and relationships. For our purposes, we will focus on relationships. How does confidence and uncertainty affect the following relationships?

Boyfriend/girlfriend

Parent/child

Employer/Employee

When we placed our faith in Christ we started a new relationship with God.

How might uncertainty affect that relationship?

Read Colossians 2:1-3

For I want you to know how great a struggle I have on your behalf and for those who are at Laodicea, and for all those who have not personally seen my face, 2 that their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

These verses mention some of the wonderful things we receive through Christ.  We receive treasures of wisdom and knowledge.  We also receive "full assurance of understanding." How might the confidence we find through our connection with Christ positively affect the way we relate with God?

The Bible describes our relationship with God in terms that give us confidence. It also tells us that we should have confidence in our new life in Jesus.

Our relationship with God. (What is its origin?)

The confidence that we have is a result of what Jesus has done for us. Because of his love and grace, we are completely forgiven and accepted by God.

READ Ephesians 2:8, 9

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

GRACE:

What comes to your mind when you think about grace?

In the Bible, grace refers to unmerited favor, an undeserved gift.

What role did grace play in establishing your relationship with God?

SAVED:

Saved is being rescued, spared from disaster.

What were you rescued from?

FAITH:

How do you define faith?

The Bible emphasizes that faith is belief, trust, and commitment which leads to changes in attitude, and action.

What does faith have to do with receiving Christ? (vs 9)

KEY QUESTION:

Suppose you were standing before God and He asked you, “Why should I let you into heaven?” What would you say?

Ephesians 2:8-9 tells us that our new relationship with God is based on what Jesus has done. It isn’t something that we created.

READ 2 Corinthians 5:17-18

17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. 18 Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.

When you trusted Christ to be your Savior and Lord, you began a new spiritual life. Verse 18 emphasizes that “these things are from God.” We have received new life as a free gift.

With our new life, comes eternal life.

Read 1 John 5:11-13.

11 And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

Work through the following questions to discover how clear God’s message is for us and what sort of confidence he gives us through Christ.

Based on 1 John 5:12:

Is it possible to have the Son and not have the life?

Is it possible to think you have the life but don’t?

Is it possible to have the life but not be sure?

Based on 1 John 5:13:

To whom is John writing these things?

Why does he write them? Does John believe we can know we have eternal life?

In Christ, we experience New Life

In HIM is Life, Eternal Life

KEY QUESTION:

If you were to die tonight, how sure are you that you would spend eternity with God? (0 to 100%)

Why did you select the percentage you chose?

Our confidence should be based totally on Jesus Christ. Our salvation is not earned. Thus confidence should not be attached to what we have done but rather to Jesus and what he has done for us . From the moment you placed your faith in Christ, God has given you eternal life.

Are any of these truths especially meaningful to you right now? If so, why?

God gives us OVERWHELMING confidence. Take a minute to see ten things God says about YOU.
